Buyer summary: Saw palmetto extract oil and saw palmetto powder are not interchangeable purchasing descriptions. Buyers should define the botanical source, physical form, fatty-acid specification, test method, carrier system and intended dosage form before comparing quotations.
Saw palmetto oil vs powder: the practical difference
Saw palmetto ingredients are derived from Serenoa repens fruit, but commercial grades can differ substantially. A lipid extract is normally selected for oil-compatible softgels or liquid systems and is commonly specified by total fatty acids. A free-flowing powder may be a dry extract, an adsorbed oil or another processed form. The words “extract powder” alone do not establish the active specification.
| Buyer check | Extract oil | Powder form |
|---|---|---|
| Typical format | Viscous lipid extract | Dry, free-flowing powder |
| Key specification | Total fatty acids and sterols, with method stated | Extract ratio or standardised marker, plus carrier disclosure |
| Common dosage-form fit | Softgels and oil-based liquids | Capsules, tablets, blends or dry mixes, subject to formulation testing |
| Critical documentation | Fatty-acid assay, identity, contaminants and oxidation-related controls | Identity, assay or ratio basis, carrier, moisture, microbiology and contaminants |
What does “85% fatty acids” mean?
An 85% fatty-acid claim should appear with the analytical method and result basis on the specification and batch COA. Buyers should confirm whether the stated value is total fatty acids, which method is used, and whether the reported result applies to the exact offered batch. A percentage in a product name is not a substitute for a current COA.
LongBio’s listed oil grade is Saw Palmetto Extract Oil 85% Fatty Acids. Qualification should still be based on the current specification, offered-batch documentation and the buyer’s destination-market requirements.
Six points to include in an RFQ
- Botanical identity: Serenoa repens, plant part and source information.
- Required form: oil or powder, including any carrier or encapsulation system.
- Assay: target fatty-acid or other marker specification and required test method.
- Application: softgel, hard capsule, tablet, beverage or another finished format.
- Compliance: destination country, contaminant limits, certification and documentation requirements.
- Commercial details: annual volume, trial quantity, packaging, delivery destination and requested lead time.
COA and supplier-document checklist
For each offered grade, request a product specification and a recent representative COA before sampling. For an order decision, review the COA for the actual batch. The document set may also include the test-method reference, safety data sheet, allergen or GMO statements, residual-solvent information, stability or storage guidance and relevant food-safety certificates.
Match the legal entity and manufacturing site across the quotation, specification, COA and certificates. LongBio publishes its current FSSC 22000, ISO 22000, cGMP, Kosher and Halal evidence so buyers can check certificate numbers, named entities, scope and validity.
Questions buyers should resolve before sampling
Can oil and powder use the same fatty-acid specification?
Do not assume so. A powder can contain carriers or use a different processing route, which changes how the assay is expressed. Ask for the exact composition and result basis.
Is a high extract ratio equivalent to an 85% fatty-acid grade?
No. An extract ratio describes input and output quantities under a stated process; it does not by itself prove a fatty-acid concentration. Compare grades using the specification and method required for the application.
What should a sample request include?
State the target grade, dosage form, trial quantity, destination, testing requirements and the documentation needed with the sample. This reduces the chance of receiving a technically unsuitable form.
Can LongBio provide a current COA and quotation?
Qualified buyers can request the current specification, representative or offered-batch COA, sample availability, MOQ, packaging and quotation for the selected grade.
